Beef and Gravy with Mashed Potatoes

The first time I tried this delicious dish, it was at some party and it was being served at a potluck. As with any potluck, it can be somewhat hit or miss, there are some dishes which you have out of respect and there are some which you wouldn’t mind having two servings. My husband and I were pleasantly surprised with this one particular dish, which was minced meat served with boiled potatoes. Since both my husband and I loved the dish so much, I couldn’t help but ask for the recipe. Turns out this was not only my husband’s and my favorite dish, but everyone else really enjoyed it too and were curious enough to ask for the recipe and the ingredients. It was delightful, filling and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

So, after having a meal together I went to meet the chef; she was an elderly woman with a beautiful smile and she made the best dishes. All the attention I was providing to her delighted her when she gave me the recipe. I was eager to go back and test it out for myself. It was my Turn to test this dish and I was really excited. Will it taste as good as the one she makes? I am pleased to say that it was spectacular, and better yet, it was just the recipe I had been looking for. We used to enjoy this dish with boiled mashed potatoes that was topped with the sauce of our choice.

At this point, I would like to offer you this breathtaking thing as I believe it to make your meals as enjoyable as it does ours. Allow me to explain how to prepare this simple yet joyous and wholesome dish fit for all occasions.

Ingredients :

2 lbs of potatoes, flayed and diced into fourths. (Simplified) 2 lbs of potatoes, flayed and diced into fourths.

1 cup of milk

4 spoons of butter

Salt and pepper to taste.

For the meat and sauce: 1 lbs of ground beef.

1 medium size onion, finely chopped

2 pieces of garlic, finely chopped.

2 cups of all purpose flour

2 servings of meat broth

1 serving of Worcestershire sauce

Salt and pepper to taste

1 cup of frozen pea and carrots is optional.

Instructions:

To start off, you need to make the mashed potatoes.

Peel the potatoes, chop them and place them in a big pot. Do add some water, but only enough to just cover the potatoes. With a little sprinkle of salt, heat up the potatoes until they reach a boiling point.

After reaching the boiling point, reduce the temperature and allow the potatoes to cook on a lower heat until they are soft, which roughly should take 20 minutes.

Once the desired time is up, drain the water from the boiled potatoes, and put them back in the pot. Take some butter and milk, put them in the pot and start mashing everything together until it all is smooth. Sprinkle salt and pepper as per your desire. Cover the pot with a lid so that the potatoes remain warm as you prepare the sauce.

Now you need to prepare the ground meat and the sauce.

Now using a large frying pan, heat the medium to high ground beef until its thoroughly cooked. Remove any unnecessary oil.

Add the diced onion and minced garlic in the frying pan where the meat is, and let it cook for around 5 minutes until the onion turns translucent.

Now mix the beef with the flour and for two minutes continuously stir the mix till you fully get rid of the raw flour flavor.

While stirring, slowly add the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Remember to scrape and stir the bottom of the pan for any browned bits. Heat the mixture until you see soft bubbles starting to form and WARM until all the ingredients basically blend and if we are lucky, the desired sauce we are aiming for would be ready at around five minutes.

If you prefer, you may add the frozen peas and carrots to the pot when the cooking time is almost over. Their color and extra nutrients are a valuable addition.

Adding salt and black pepper to cream sauce can be done to one’s individual taste.

Presentation: Creamy mashed potatoes can be presented in bowls or on the plates.

Potatoes and gravy can now be served with cooked ground beef.

It all can be reheated and become a bit warm and relaxing because it is just that good.

I still remember how I prepared this food for the first time, and my husband, perfume in hand, walked into the kitchen. He asked, “so what are you concocting” peeking over my shoulder, and I told him and he said he is quite sure that’s the case if this did not happen, “I knew it.”

The food was similar to the meat that we shared, which we remembered coming back to it — we were both very pleased. The ground beef and gravy accompanied with creamy buttery mashed potatoes were delicious. From this day onwards, we both agreed to start with this dish.

Ever since that moment, it has fully integrated into this household. It is a great dish for a stay in which is paired nicely with a chilly weather outside. For some reason, I find this dish to be incredibly easy to cook yet it has the taste of a five star restaurant meal.

One thing I absolutely love about this recipe is how customizable it can be. Sometimes, I like to switch it up a bit. Maybe to enhance the sauce I could add some mushrooms for a new taste or while preparing the mashed potatoes I could add a mix of sweet and regular potatoes. You can opt for ground turkey instead of beef or throw in more vegetables like green beans or corn to make it a bit more healthy. You can substitute beef with ground turkey or include more vegetables, such as green beans or corn, to lower the calorie count.

Alternatively: You can make the mashed potatoes in advance if you’re running late for something. When heated with a bit of milk, they regain their creaminess. You can store the sauce in the refrigerator for a few days, making it ideal for preparing supper in advance.

Now this dish has also taken the first position in our list for casual dinners with friends. It’s easy to prepare more of this dish for a large crowd, and it is wholesome for everyone. The way flavors and sensations blend with one another to make a delightful moment is very special. Also, there is warmth that can only be derived from food cooked at home.

Would you like to have a good and satisfying meal that you know will please everybody? You must try this dish of minced meat with sauce over mashed potatoes. It’s a dish that creates happy memories that has satisfied many. Just as it did in our home, it may also become a hit in yours.
